New Cub Scout Program Updates: Bobcat Rank Changes
Introducing a game-changing update to the Cub Scout program: the Bobcat Adventure! 🐾
Instead of Bobcat being a mandatory pre-rank, the Bobcat teachings will be spread out across all Cub Scout ranks! Now, every Cub Scout will embark on the Bobcat Adventure each year, tailored to their age and grade level. From Kindergarten to 5th grade, we’re ensuring that character and leadership development are at the forefront of every Scout’s journey.
No more one-size-fits-all approach – the Bobcat Adventure is designed to meet Scouts where they are, with age-appropriate requirements that inspire growth and achievement. Plus, this will solve the issue of what to do if Den Leaders have Cub Scouts who already earned Bobcat and ones who have not.
With a focus on key areas like character, outdoors, personal fitness, citizenship, safety, and family, each Cub Scout Adventure sets the stage for success in Scouting and beyond.

Cub Scouting serves youth from kindergarten to 5th grade and one set of requirements is ineffective in meeting the objectives! How to effectively introduce the values of Scouting (character & leadership) to a Cub Scout in Kindergarten is vastly different than how to do so with a Cub Scout in 4th grade. This is why the Bobcat rank, originally a mandatory pre-rank for all new Cubs will be updated into a required adventure across all the Cub Scout ranks.
Now, Cub Scouts will earn the Bobcat Adventure for their rank each year. Bobcat will become a required Adventure for each rank with a focus on character & leadership. It is designed to be the first required Adventure to be completed each year. The requirements for the Bobcat for each rank are different and designed to be age appropriate. This will also nullify the issue of what to do if Den Leaders have Cub Scouts who already earned Bobcat and ones who have not.
Each rank is associated with a grade level. To earn each badge of rank, Cub Scouts must complete six required Cub Scout Adventures and two elective Cub Scout Adventures. The six required Cub Scout Adventures for each rank are based on the aims and focus areas of the BSA:
- Character & Leadership
- Outdoors
- Personal Fitness
- Citizenship
- Safety
- Family & Reverence
