New Cub Scout Program Updates: STEM Adventures

Next on the list of exciting updates coming to the Cub Scout program: Updated STEM Adventures! The National BSA office noticed that many of our available Cub Scout adventures only fulfilled the Science portion of STEM, leaving room for growth in the Technology, Engineering, and Math areas of STEM. In the new Cub Scout program, these areas are fully embraced! The National office is rolling out a ton of exciting new adventures that give our Cubs the opportunity to explore the world around us through the lenses of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math! Hi, I’m Andrew from the Harford District and I’m here to talk to you about the new STEM Adventure Updates  that will become available with the rollout of the new Cub Scout program updates later this year.

The National BSA organization believes that STEM is important and should be included in the core Cub Scout program as elective Adventures. As a result, new elective Adventures have been created and included in the new Cub Scout program to ensure that the elements of STEM are a part of each of the rank advancement for each grade level.

A study was conducted to identify areas where Cub Scout Adventures were lacking in the areas of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM). Cub Scouting already had a lot of great science-based elective Adventures but the study found there were gaps in technology, engineering, and math. Now, new elective Adventures have been developed to ensure that each rank has at least one elective Adventure based in science, technology, engineering, and math.

In June 2022, the STEM Nova and Supernova awards were retired as national level awards. Although these awards are no longer supported nationally, local councils had the option to continue them as local council awards. Since new elective Adventures have been created for each rank advancement to ensure that there is an elective Adventure for science, technology, engineering, and math, the Baltimore Area Council will not implement these legacy awards as council awards, as we support the national implementation of incorporating STEM into the newly developed Cub Scout Advancement program.
